STEVE SPYRES
Had the urge to start banging on things when I was 9 years old.
My sister who is 10 years my senior bought me a used set from
a neighbor but it was a cardboard set and just didn't have the
durability to withstand my aggressions, I mean talent ! After
continual pleading I finally talked my parents into buying me
a drum set. Well little did I know, my begging only worked for
just a Hi Hat. The rest of the kit had to come much later when
I was 16 years old and had to purchase the kit on my own. My other
neighbor, Don Price who played the drums for over 40 years had
an old Slingerland set, era 1952. Sizes were 14 x 26 BD, 9 x 13
T, 16 x 16 FT in Black Oyster. Being hopeful, I approached him
and asked if I could buy them from him. Very much to my surprise
and the fact he was a real nice person his reply was, "Well
Steve, they're to old to sell but if you get a snare and a Bass
pedal, I'll give them to you". Now was that righteous or
what !!!!!
So as time went on I took lessons from Don's son, Dave Price
whom is a very talented & excellent drummer. I've owned kits
ranging from CB 700, Slingerland & Pearl. Currently I'm using
Slingerland 5 x12 wood snare (timbale), Slingerland 8 x 14 wood
snare. Pearl, 16 x 22 BD, 8 x 10, 10 x 10, 10 x 12, 11 x 13 Tom,
16 x 16 FT., DW 5000 Hi Hat & Double Bass Pedals. Cymbals
are Zildjian.
Many bands have come and gone in between. My first band was called
"World" which mainly consisted of my brother and I.
Here a list of some others, "Rye Patch Resorvoir", "Headfirst",
"We Three Band", a trio that didn't even have a name
and some I've probably have forgotten about and my favorite, "3rd
Axis".
My major influences are: Buddy Rich, whom goes without even mentioning;
Phil Collins, Simon Phillips, Carter Beauford, Charley Adams,
Neil Peart, Bill Bruford only to name just a few!!!!!.
My philosophy to playing is learn all that you can, always be
open to new & different things but most importantly, ENJOY
and have FUN with what you're doing !!!!
